Why Do Adults Get Acne?

Most of us will have gotten spots during our teen years. It’s to be expected. But some adults can and do get spots well beyond their teens. But what causes some adults to get acne? And most importantly how do you get rid of it? A recent study by British Association of Dermatology (BAD) found that drug-resistant ‘super acne’ is on the rise.

This super acne is said to be the direct result of people relying on antibiotics to get rid of spots, so people are now looking for other ways to combat acne. But first;

What causes it?

As with adolescent acne, adult acne can be a result of your hormones. Hormonal changes can cause your skin to produce an excess of sebum, an oily secretion that comes out of sebaceous glands. Some women during menopause experience acne and this is a result of a fluctuation of hormonal levels.

Some prescriptions’ side-effects can be acne or acne-like breakouts. Some of the common medications that can cause acne are some birth control pills and antidepressants.

Also, if you live in a busy city, the chances are the air quality is not going to be the cleanest. Pollutants from fumes of cars, factories etc. enter the atmosphere and can sit on our skin and clog up pores. This results in spots.

Other factors include stress, smoking and drinking.

So, how do I prevent and banish acne?

A daily skin routine is the best way to get rid of acne and to prevent further breakouts.

  1. Start each morning with a face wash. Whether it’s over the sink, in the shower or in the bath, use a clean flannel and warm water. We recommend our Ac-Norm Active Foam Plus. This active foam gently cleanses the skin, effectively removing excess oil and pollutants. It treats acne by controlling excess oil production (with AHA), prevents the development of inflammation, germs and removes dead cells.
  1. Follow up with a refreshing cleanser. An alcohol-free, light cleanser removes the remaining impurities of the face wash. Try our Ac-Norm Micellar Water. This soothing cleanser effectively removes excess oil and dirt without stripping the skin and leaving it tight. The cleanser’s active ingredients also reduce the inflammation common with acne.
  1. Apply a light treat and preventive cream such as our Ac-Norm Seb Adsorb Cream. The cream absorbs excess skin oil whilst also treating the symptoms of acne. This cream reduces the appearance of pores making it an ideal base for makeup.
  1. Treat and tint! This Ac-Norm Tinted Cream ideal for treating spots as well as giving a bit of coverage. The tinted gel treats the pimples of oily, acne-prone skin whilst giving a smooth coating suitable for all skin tones to hide blemishes.
