How to Soothe Your Teething Baby

Nothing is worse than hearing your child in pain and teething is a tough time for both baby and parents.

As new teeth grow through their soft gums, babies experience a lot of pain and discomfort, making them cry often and have trouble sleeping.

When do babies start to teethe?

Babies normally start teething around 6 months of age, but it’s normal to start any time between 3 and 12 months.

Once they reach their 3rd birthday they will normally have all their primary set of teeth, with the lower front teeth usually coming through first.

What are the signs my baby is teething?

The average ways to tell if your baby is teething include:

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Swollen, inflamed and red gums
  • Teeth trying to break through gums
  • Heavy dribbling
  • Biting, sucking and chewing on things
  • Not feeding properly/rejecting food
  • More irritable and crying more often than is normal for them

How to soothe a teething baby

Here are some time-tested and effective ways to ease the pain of your teething baby

Numb those gums

Go to the source of the problem by trying different ways to soothe baby’s gums. A clean soft toy or washcloth that’s been chilled in the fridge can help ease their pain.

Let your baby suck on it to gently numb their gums and soothe the pain.

Try teething gel

A tried and trusted way to give your teething baby some relief is by using teething gel. Our soft Baby Gums Gel (Medical device, CE 2803) is a soft gel for the treatment and relief of the baby’s sensitive gums during first teething. It creates a moisturizing and protective film around the developing gums and teeth, thus relieving the pain and discomfort caused by the first teething.

The gel is wonderfully anti-inflammatory without containing any lidocaine, alcohol, parabens colourants, salicylics, sugar or saccharin.

Teething toys and rings

Another way to help the new teeth come through are teething toys and rings. Like anything that comes in contact with your baby, make sure it’s ok for their age, clean, safe and non-toxic.

Anything that a baby can put in their mouth should not be a choking hazard.

Finger massage

After washing your hands thoroughly, use a clean finger to gently rub and massage your baby’s gums to give them temporary relief from pain.

Lots of cuddles

Like any parent, when your child is in discomfort, pain or just unhappy your instinct is to give them a big hug. When your baby is teething one of the best things you can do is to give them lots of cuddles. The reassurance of your touch and warmth works wonders.
