Yikes! 5 Ways To Protect Your Child from Head Lice

It’s September. It’s back to school week. Your kids have been on holiday for weeks and it’s time for new uniforms, this year’s must-have lunchbox and a whole pencil case full of new stationary.

But as dozens of little heads all come together in the classroom, your family are suddenly under siege from head lice! There’s nothing more irritating than seeing you and your family become dinner for a few thousand little parasites, so here are five things you can do to protect your kids and yourselves from head lice!

  1. No sharing

Only children should be great at this already! (We jest.) Not sharing some of these key items will help minimise the risk of catching lice:

  • Hats and scarves
  • Combs
  • Helmets (bikes, scooters, skateboards)
  • Hair bands, bobbles, etc.
  • Pillows and bedding

Make sure they know there should be no stigma around lice – it’s just a fact of life that sometimes people get lice.

  1. Cut down on risky behaviour

Along with your list of items not to share, some usual activities should be off-limits during a lice outbreak at school:

  • Sleepovers
  • Dressing-up games
  • Play-fighting, martial arts, or other activities requiring close physical contact

  1. Use a preventative lotion

FrezyDerm’s Lice Rep Lotion puts lice off choosing your child’s head as a new home using entirely natural ingredients. It contains tea tree, lavender and geranium oil, which repel lice. It also has neem essential oil, which inhibits the growth of lice larva. It’s for adults and children, so you can use it, too.

  1. Use a detection comb for the first few weeks of school

If your school hasn’t had a lice outbreak by a week or two after the holidays, you’ve missed the real danger zone. Until then, using a detecting comb when you comb your child’s hair will help you find out whether they have life as soon as possible, meaning you can start treatment sooner rather than later. Detection combs are the white, very-fine-toothed combs that lice and their eggs (nits) show up on.

  1. React Quickly

If you find lice in the comb, you should start treatment immediately! Our Lice Free Set contains a Special shampoo, a Lice killing spray and Fined toothed comb (Medical device, 2803).
