Quick! Protect Yourself Against London’s Hard Water

What Is Hard Water?

Water becomes hard when pure rainwater gains minerals from soil, rocks and sand. This means it becomes infused with high levels of calcium and magnesium. Although hard water is not dangerous it can take its toll on your hair and skin.

Hair that is constantly washed in hard water may become brittle, straw-like and dry. Skin exposed to hard water may become dry or irritated and prone to skin conditions, including eczema. However, there are several small changes you can make to your hair and skincare routines that will reduce the impact of hard water.

Where Is Hard Water Found?

In the UK hard water is found in London, the South, the South East, the Midlands, North Yorkshire and Humberside.

If you live in a hard water area you may find that your tap water has a slightly metallic taste, even though it is safe to drink. You may also observe that soaps, shampoos and skincare products do not lather very much.

How Can I Save My Hair from Hard Water?

When washing your hair, use a hydrating shampoo followed by a conditioner, which will replenish lost moisture from hair.

If your hair is especially affected by hard water consider buying a filtered showerhead or shower filter, which can be found at most home improvement shops. You could also rinse your hair with filtered tap water, after washing it.

How Can I Save My Skin from Hard Water?

If you’re showering or bathing in an area with hard water, apply an emollient after washing to protect and rehydrate the skin. We would recommend our Christalen Emulsion.

How to Soothe Dry Hands

If the skin on your face is especially sensitive, avoid rinsing it under hot water while in the shower, instead consider washing it at the sink using bottled water or filtered tap water.

After showering, cleanse your face using a lotion to remove any residue from the hard water before applying a face moisturiser.
