Best Tips for Reducing Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are narrow streaks or lines on the skin, which occur when the skin is stretched beyond its normal elastic threshold – most commonly during pregnancy, growth-spurts and periods of weight gain.

They tend to first appear on women’s skin during puberty and pregnancy. This is because hormonal changes can cause our natural store of collagen and elastin to weaken, leaving the skin vulnerable to stretch mark formation.

Stretch marks commonly appear on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen. They are usually red or purple but will fade over time to have a silver-white appearance. They tend to appear in patches and can resemble scars.

Preventing the appearance of stretch marks

Although it is impossible to completely prevent the appearance of stretch marks during pregnancy, keeping your skin healthy and hydrated can help keep them at bay.

Keep your skin hydrated by regularly applying an emollient, our Prevenstria Cream that moisturises the skin, increases its elasticity and resilience and can be used to protect the skin against stretch marks from the third month of pregnancy.

It is also important to keep your body continually hydrated with water throughout pregnancy, which will help nourish the skin.

BODY CARE TIPS FOR WINTER

Even if it’s difficult to entirely get rid of your stretch marks, there are a number of things you can do to reduce their appearance or to eliminate them.

Keep your skin hydrated using a firming cream designed to target stretch marks. Our Reconstria Cream rebuilds collagen and elastin, restoring the skin’s elasticity and reducing the appearance of stretch marks. Regular exfoliation may also help by stimulating the cells that produce collagen.

If you have very severe stretch marks you may wish to try laser treatment. Having your stretch marks gently treated by lasers can boost collagen growth and decrease redness. It may take a number of sessions before you see results.

If severe stretch marks develop at any time of life we would recommend seeking professional advice from your GP or dermatologist.
