How to Soothe Sunburned Skin

We should always take every step to protect our sun from the skin. Being over exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main cause of skin cancer in the UK. Being burned painfully once every two years is enough to triple your risk of melanoma skin cancer.

Your immediate punishment for getting burned, however, is red, sensitive, peeling skin for the days to come. Here is how to soothe skin that has been sunburned.

  1. Always use after sun

A lot of the time, it’s hard to know whether you’ve actually burned. It can take a whole day for skin to become red and uncomfortable. Whether you’ve burned or not, applying after sun will soothe your skin after a day of exposure to sand, salt, chlorine and sunlight. FrezyDerm After Sun Mousse soothes irritations, hydrates skin and prevents photo-ageing of the skin.

  1. Aloe, aloe!

Aloe Vera is well-known for its burn-soothing properties. Applying a cut leaf, gel or juice directly to the burned area can sooth pain, hydrate peeling skin and even has antibacterial effects.

  1. Cold compress

Skin feels hot and uncomfortable after being sunburned. This is because the UV light damages your skin, causing the surface blood vessels to widen. The excess blood flow radiates more heat than usual. A cold compress will keep the area cooler, lessen inflammation and soothe pain.

  1. Become a shady character

After being burned, you should be extra careful in the sun the next few days. It’s best just to avoid the sun altogether where possible, and certainly to cover up the burned area when outside.

  1. Use a time machine

We’ve said it before and now we’ll say it again – the best thing is just not to get sunburn in the first place! Jump in your time machine and this time apply a high SPF sun cream 30 minutes before going into the sun, then again just before you set off.
