Ways to Soothe Sensitive Skin

Skin sensitivity now affects two-thirds of us, a figure that has hugely increased in the past thirty years. We know how irritating, uncomfortable and upsetting having sensitive skin can be. We also know that it is tricky to recommend a one-size-fits-all approach to caring for sensitive skin, as the causes are different for each individual. However, we can recommend ways to identify the causes of your sensitive skin and to start treating it.

What is sensitive skin?

The characteristics of sensitive skin are different for each individual but common symptoms include skin appearing to be red and irritated and feeling itchy and tight. Those with sensitive skin may also have skin conditions, such as eczema and rosacea.

Those who are prone to asthma, eczema, skin irritations, hay fever and other allergies are likely to have sensitive skin. Those who have had a reaction to products in the past, blush easily and rarely tan may also have it.

What causes it?

The causes of sensitive skin and skin conditions can be difficult to diagnose because they vary from person-to-person. The best thing to do is identify the ingredients that irritate your skin, this may be through trial and error or you may wish to seek the help of a dermatologist. Once you have identified the ingredients you can make sure you avoid them.

If you have sensitive skin we would advise you to stop using all skincare products that contain scented ingredients or perfumes, as these are common aggravators.

How should I treat it?

Firstly, don’t over do it! Although it may seem tempting to apply a few products to your face, we would recommend using the least possible products. Applying any more may upset the delicate balance of your skin. Think quality not quantity!

We would recommend establishing a skin routine with a series of carefully selected products, which contain no aggravating ingredients.

Begin by washing your face morning and evening with a gentle cleanser. The FREZYDERM Mild Wash Liquid, is suitable for sensitive skin and thoroughly cleanses without causing irritation.

Follow your cleansing by applying a gentle and hydrating moisturizer. Our Sensitive Red Cream regulates and reverses the symptoms of rosacea and sensitive irritated skin.

For sensitive skin on your body we would recommend using a gentle, non-perfumed body moisturizer. The FREZYDERM Sooth Balm is a hydrating body cream for sensitive skin that is prone to itching and irritation.

If you are struggling to identify the cause of your sensitive skin we would recommend seeking the advice of a dermatologist or GP.
