Why We Love Hyaluronic Acid and Why You Should Too

You may not be sure whether your skin is dry or dehydrated. Dry skin is generally a skin type, rather than a condition, and is caused by a lack of oil in the skin. Dehydrated skin is caused by a lack of moisture, rather than oil. This means that dry skin and dehydrated skin need different solutions, as they’re caused by different factors.

Dry skin may be caused or exacerbated by ageing, weather/temperature, diet and lifestyle choices. The skin may feel rough and tight, and may be sensitive to products, and aggravated by poor skincare routines. As we age, our skin’s oil production slows, and we may begin to suffer from dry skin, meaning it is crucial to change your skincare routine as we age.

Dehydrated skin may also feel tight but can still feel oily, as it’s not suffering from a lack of oil, but of moisture. It can commonly be caused by product usage, such as acne treatments, retinol and AHAs. These products can ‘strip’ the skin, and the user can be fearful of making oily skin oilier.

Don’t let the term ‘acid’ scare you away from hyaluronic acids, it is not an acid in the way that salicylic acid or glycolic acids are. It doesn’t chemically exfoliate like these are, it’s a naturally occurring element of our skin, and it retains moisture. This makes it ideal for treating dehydrated skin.

Hyaluronic acid molecules can retain over 1000 times their weight in water, making them a wonder product for delivering and retaining moisture in the skin, but they’re not all created equal!

How to Keep Your Skin Hydrated over the Winter Months

For example, we use a high molecular weight hyaluronic acid in our Facial Scrub so that it forms a protective film to reduce irritations from friction. This makes it an ideal scrub for people with sensitive or dry skin.

We use a low molecular weight hyaluronic acid with in Dermiox Cream to offer deep hydration within the skin. Our Moisturizing Rich Cream contains three different hyaluronic acid molecules, with different molecular weight, for different transdermal penetration to offer the ultimate in hydration when you need it most.
