Great skin is about using the right products for you. Knowing your skin type is the first step towards working out which products can get your skin the best results, helping you reach radiant, happy, glowing skin perfection!
This guide to the three main facial skin types will let you know what causes each type of skin, as well as giving you some great tips for managing the effects for perfect, healthy-looking skin.
Dry skin
Dry facial skin produces too little of the natural oils the skin excretes to protect itself. The result is that skin can look flakey, feeling rough and dry. It might often feel tight or uncomfortable – especially if you don’t moisturise after showering or live in an area with hard water. (See our guide to protect against hard water here!)
The areas of the face that are prone to dryness are the cheeks, temples and into parts of the forehead. These areas have fewer oil secreting glands, so are less able to retain their moisture. If you fail to properly dry your face after washing, the water that evaporates pulls more water from your skin with it, meaning when you skin dries, it will be even drier than before!
Be sure to properly dry and then moisturise after cleansing the face. If you suffer from dry skin on the face, we’ve developed a range of moisturising creams to use depending on the age of your skin: Moisturizing 24h Cream for young skin, Moisturizing Plus Cream for older skin and Moisturizing Rich Cream for mature skin.
Oily skin
The parts of the face that are most likely to become oily are found in the T-zone. This is made up of the middle of the forehead, the nose and the chin. It is in these areas that the face has the most sebaceous glands. These are glands that produce sebum, the oily substance that protects skin, but also causes acne when produced to excess.
It can be tempting to blast an oily face with strong cleansers, hot water and a lot of scrubbing – but this isn’t the best thing you can do, and it might even further irritate your skin. Cleansing gently and often with a specialist product will save you all that scrubbing and is much easier on your face. Use our Ac-Norm Total Control Cream after daily cleansing. It contains salicylic acid to regulate sebum and prevent oily skin from progressing into acne.
Combination skin
Nature is cruel, and because dry and oily skin happen on different parts of the face, having one condition doesn’t stop you from getting the other! Many people have an oily T-zone but dry skin on the rest of their face and neck.
If this sounds like you, don’t despair! It’s perfectly possible to use different products on different parts of your face, cleansing your T-zone while giving your dry areas the moisturizing care they need. For a great oil-free hydrating cream, try our Matte Effect Cream. It leaves a matte finish which is great for combination skin.
