How to Get Rid of Dandruff

Dandruff is everyone’s hair care nightmare. Flaking into hair and clothes, dandruff is not a pretty sight and can be a warning sign of a very unhealthy scalp.

Here, we give you the causes of the condition, explaining how to treat it quickly.

What causes dandruff? Medical causes

Dandruff is when the skin on your scalp flakes off, getting caught in your hair and clothes, specking them with unpleasant white spots.

Dandruff can be caused by several factors. The most common cause of dandruff is a dry scalp. If you have dry skin on other parts of your body there’s a good chance that this is the cause of your dandruff.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition which can cause dandruff. The exact causes of seborrheic dermatitis aren’t well understood, but if you have the condition, dandruff is likely to take the form of slightly larger flakes of irritated, scaly skin.

Eczema, scalp fungus and other skin irritations can also cause dandruff.

What causes dandruff? Non-medical causes

If you do not have any medical issues but do have dandruff, it is likely that you simply don’t wash your hair and scalp enough.

Natural oils, broken hairs and dead skin all naturally clump together on the scalp and are removed by washing. If you don’t clean your hair often enough, this build-up can become visible in the form of dandruff.

Dandruff shampoos

Many shampoos are created for the purpose of treating dandruff. Some contain antibacterial and antifungal ingredients to treat underlying medical conditions. These are often obtained on prescription.

If you are prone to dandruff due to build-up on the scalp, antidandruff shampoos can make a big difference. FREZYDERM has produced two types of antidandruff shampoo to fight dandruff on both dry and oily hair.

Our Antidandruff Shampoo uses climbazole to fight oily dandruff on the scalp, reducing sebum-excess by 57%. Apply like normal shampoo, leave in for 2-3 minutes, then rinse out to see a 45% reduction in visible flakes.

If a dry scalp is causing your dandruff, use our Mediated Shampoo to sooth and hydrate your scalp, reducing irritation by 13% with a mix of Manuka and willow bark extract.

Drop the heat

Drying out the scalp is another way to worsen dandruff. Several everyday habits can contribute to this, and changing them could pass on a big reduction in the visibility of your dandruff.

Using a hot hairdryer quickly dries out the scalp. This is particularly true of shorter hair, since shorter hair means the scalp has less protection from the dryer’s hot air. Consider turning the heat setting on your hair dryer down.

Hot water can also contribute. Very-hot water in the shower can strip the hair and scalp of its natural oils. These oils protect the skin’s outer layer, the epidermis. Without them, the epidermis is prone to damage and the flaking which causes dandruff.

Losing the heat is a great way to get rid of dandruff.
